Assimilation
By Tatiana Pahlen

"A seed shall follow its own kind"
[Genesis]

Why the roots of the exotic trees
planted warmly with sun and breeze,
Before reached the joy of growth
stretched their seeds on a foreign earth?

Their lumpy limbs – a playground for doves
lengthen shadows cover awkward coves
There's no glint in the tarnished leaves,
banned from Eden, as if Adam and Eve.

Yet believing in the wondrous myth,
they usher in the rest of their kith;
Passing their lore from bough to bough
To vanquish
the tides
with their tribal howl.
